This top is a new idea that combines insulation and the top. The rim of this top is built with extra height to allow for a piece of home-grade insulation and an extra piece of plywood to keep the insulation contained. The sides of this top hang down the same as a normal top would, and there is still a bit of wiggle room to provide ventilation with an inner cover. This would definitely be a good option for overwintering, but beekeepers are considering using insulation in the summer too, as it would help keep the cooler air in.
